The Effects of Energy Drinks on Sports Performance


Over the past ten years, adolescents and athletes have used more energy drinks (e.g., those containing caffeine and taurine) to raise their cognitive function and boost academic and athletic performance.

Energy drinks where first made in 1960 in Europe and Asia ,In 1987, a well-known brand of energy drinks made their debut in Austria, and over the ensuing years, they proliferated all over the world.


As they have gotten more popular, their consumption has grown tremendously, creating a multibillion-dollar business

Numerous studies have demonstrated that consuming these drinks in moderation has positive impacts since they significantly improve the athletic performance of elite athletes in a variety of sports, including both explosive and endurance events.

But in addition to their ergogenic effects, daily use of energy drinks raises blood pressure and, as a result, causes issues including hypertension, tachycardia, and anxiety, all of which can result in cardiovascular illnesses.

The general population uses nutritional supplements frequently, but it becomes more important for those who participate in sports, and athletes account for a sizable amount of their sales .

Dietary supplements can be quite helpful in ensuring that athletes get the right amount of calories and nutrients. They should never be used as a replacement for a balanced diet.


Energy drinks have become a crucial dietary supplement to improve athletic performance, especially when consumed acutely. The effects of caffeine and taurine have been most thoroughly researched across a variety of sports [9,10,11]. Energy drink use and performance have been linked in American football and soccer [12,13,14], as well as in athletics

The Effects of Energy Drinks on Athletics

Although there is ample proof that drinking these beverages improves athletic performance, there are risks associated with them, including the possibility of cardiovascular problems due to hypertension, altered sleep patterns in adolescents, aggravated mental illnesses, physiological dependence, and a higher likelihood of subsequent addiction .

Additionally, their potential for toxicity can result in tachycardia, arrhythmia, vomiting, and tachycardia.

Healthy individuals may experience the negative consequences of energy drink consumption, although some individuals may be more susceptible to difficulties than others.

Young, caffeine-sensitive or deficient pregnant women, competitive athletes, and those with underlying cardiovascular disease are among the high-risk categories .

It is unknown how long-term high-dose caffeine and taurine consumption would affect kids, teenagers, and athletes.
